Surprises All Around – Poetry Prompt 28

Go on, you’ll be surprised at what you’ll find.
Reams of fabric stick out from nearly every shelf
And spools of thread hide the pincushoins from sight.
Don’t forget the carved wooden box made so long ago.
Memories surround you as you glance through the pictures on the wall.
As Granny smiles at you from the bed
She tells you of where each little piece sitting about her room came from.

Remembering that some fabric is from when she was little,
Others from the time just before computers were a thing.
Or maybe she’ll say how the carved box belonged to her mother as a teen.
Maybe someday, you’ll know all her stories and all the things she’s seen in her time.

Started a while ago for one of Pooky’s poetry prompts and finally finished today: http://pookypoetry.wordpress.com/2014/05/28/poetry-prompt-28-time-difference/

This prompt reminded me a little of my Great Grandmother’s house and how I loved listening to her tell me about the different things. Before I could go into that memory too deeply, I walked by my own mother’s room and listened to her talk to some of her younger grandchildren and I know what the poem was going to be about.
