Looking Back…

Sometimes she looked back at her past and wondered at herself.

“I shouldn’t have jumped out of so many trees.” she’d grumble when her back ached.

“Maybe learning to eat strawberries with barbecue sauce wasn’t the wisest food to become acquainted with.” she’d mutter over the porcelain throne.

“Refusing to learn the piano when the lessons were freely-given by my mother wasn’t economical.” she’d sigh when looked at the work she’d traded for lessons as an adult.

“Ignoring my body’s protests before hiking this morning when I didn’t sleep well last night was stupid.” she huffed as she lost sight of the hiking group.

“Why did I say that to him!” she’d shriek as quietly as possible to her friends later about a boy she liked. “Comparing him as my brother because I was too afraid to say otherwise even to myself was more cowardly then just mumbling an excuse and running for the library!”

Then there were other times when she looked back and decided that maybe she wasn’t quite the little idiot that she had supposed.

“For all that it broke my heart, accepting the end of our engagement was the best choice at the time.” she’d whisper to her cat.

“Being able to spend time with my  nieces and nephews was better than finally defeating that video game I’ve been saving up for the last few months.” she’d laugh as her niece shrieked to be pushed higher and higher.

“Leaving that job before I burnt out was a wiser course of action then trying to do it and school at the same time.” she’d groan happily as she sank into bed after studying for an upcoming final.

Life is full of moments and though there will be many choices and actions that we regret and wish to have never done (be they hilarious or depressing) there are many more that we needed in order to become the people we are today.

This little rant was brought to you by Dungeon Prompt: In Hindsight… which made me look back and laugh at some things and cry at others.

Healing Love

Hurts amass over time,
I‘d like to think that I more sturdy than most.
Don’t forget that you will always carry
Disaster hiding in plain sight.
Everything has to begin somewhere.
Now will you ignore your scars, or respect them?

How is it that you come along
Even when my pains not gone
And hold me safe inside your arms
Letting love heal all my harms.
Even when I shout and cry
Really you are my favorite guy.

She wasn’t quite sure how to feel so she just sat there, tears streaming silently down her face. The ring that had held a place of pride on her hand now sat in her hand, the cold of the metal seeming to dull the gem that had previously shined in delight.

The door to her room opened and the pitter-patter of feet moving softly over the carpet came to a halt by her bedside. A plate was placed gently on the end table and the bed dipped as an arm came up and around her shoulders.

She said nothing as a hand gently guided her face onto a stronger shoulder and she cried out her sorrows on the shoulder of her brother.

The pie on the plate sat a silent testament to how well he knew her heart.

Both parts inspired in equal parts from Light and Shade Challenge from yesterday and the Dungeon Prompt from last Thursday.

Don’t Forget, Don’t Give Up

Come on, come on!
Look at the view!
I can’t believe it’s been here all along.
My but how high up we are!
Better get a snapshot or two or
I‘ll surely forget when I’ve gone away.
Never had I thought I would reach this point.
Giving up seemed like the way, but now I know I never will again.
“It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves.”
~Edmund Hillary

Solaris looked out over the wreckage before her and sorrowed within her heart. So many lives lost, so much destruction but if they were to defend their way of life and their ability to choose there was no other way to go about it. But, thankfully, this fight was over.

There would be a lot of work still ahead of them, but for now, they could rest.

“Is it done?”

Solaris turned and met the eyes of her Guardian.

“No, Star, it is far from done, but for now, we can rest.”

Star nodded, her eyes dark and her face pale. “I thought as much.”

She sounded dejected and Solaris frowned slightly and placed a hand on her shoulder.

“There is always light at the end-”

“But we’re not at the end, My Queen, we are far from it.”

Solaris tapped a finger against Star’s cheek and smiled,”There is still light even throughout this. I know that you miss her greatly, but are you not pleased that she has recovered?”

“You know I am, Highness.”

“And is not this battlefield already being cleaned away, the dead being buried and the wounded being healed.”

“Yes, Highness.”

“And have we not pushed Chaos, our Enemy back?”

Star nodded grudgingly, determined to be downtrodden in her misery.

“And are you and I not standing here together?”

Star sighed, feeling more put upon, but also feeling a smile tug at her lips. “I know what you are about, my Queen.”

“And you know that I shall keep going lest you give in and admit your defeat.”

Star chuckled at that, she knew that Solaris did not usually prefer more formal sounding speech and she always had the funniest look on her face when she did use it.

Solaris’s smile broadened in triumph at the sound, “There, you see? Plenty of light all around us.”
