Disappear – Snippet

There were times when Lila just wanted to throw up her hands in defeat, turn and then stomp away, but in the end, she never could bring herself to do it.

This was supposed to be more, but I got the one sentence out and everything else that was supposed to come after vanished like goat milk that my dogs can reach and my brain refused to give me any more.

Always

It’s not like I have a choice.

There is always a choice when dealing with your life, it is less what you can choose to do and more which consequences you would rather live with. You don’t get to choose the consequences, but you do get to choose the initial action that you do. Yes, circumstances affect that choice greatly, but the choice is still yours to make. Even choosing not to decide is a choice as well.

Wait For It…

It didn’t seem to matter how long something took to happen, the point was that it happened. You just had to wait for it.

Of course, that wasn’t all of it. Oh no, that would be too easy.

What you had to do was to prepare and prepare and prepare and be ready to jump at faster than an instant’s notice, but to then spend an eternity waiting for that instant to happen.

The hardest part wasn’t always the waiting, because as long as you were ready then the waiting wasn’t too bad. Plus, there were lots of things to do during the waiting time. You could read or write or draw or play games or even just rest.

No, the hardest part was staying ready while you were waiting. It was difficult, it was annoying and, more than everything else put together, it was just plain exhausting.

It was trying to remain focused while also resting in a way that let your mind wander. It wasn’t something that could stay indefinitely, but it was expected to stay like that while you waited, no matter how long you waited.

Of course, chasing around someone who was on a constant sugar high while you were waiting (especially when they were supposed to be the more ‘mature one’ or whatever) made the waiting even more difficult.

Sometimes, he thought to himself as he watched his female counterpart pounce all over the room at the speed of light (literally), It just isn’t worth getting up in the morning.

And yes, she wasn’t bouncing, she was definitely pouncing. What was she pouncing? The little flecks of dust illuminated in the beams of sunlight.

Why did I think this was a good idea again?

This little snippet was inspired by the Dungeon Prompt: Myth Making and it is supposed to be about Star and Illusion Master who are from my Former Guardian universe. There would have been more to the story, explaining what they were waiting for but my brain is a little dead at the moment and not awake enough to think about this snippet much longer. My apologies.

But yes, most of my life has been ‘hurry up, get ready now wait for it…’

Mischief Uncurbed

She frowned at the devious smile in front of her.

“No.”

The smile widened.

“No.”

The smile started to turn into a smirk which underscored the deviousness of it all the more.

“No!”

The venomous quality of the final shout did nothing to curb the mischief sparkling her sister’s eyes.

Sparked by the words for this last week’s Three Word Wednesday. It’s been a while since I used a prompt from here and I’m sorry for the long absence as I’ve enjoyed 3WW a great deal.

Glinting Coldly

She glared at me through misty eyes, “I don’t even know if you’re alive in there or some horrible golem placed here on earth to trick and deceive me!”

He said nothing as she hurled her words at him, dripping in vitriol and agony. When he continued to say nothing under further verbal assault she shoved her way past him and left, stomping just loud enough for him to hear her until she’d rounded the corner.

Forgotten in his hand was a slim circle of gold, the light glinting coldly off of the stone set within it.

This snippet is brought to you by the prompt from Three Word Wednesday last week.

Why do I write sad things?

Extended Family

Mary didn’t talk about any extended family when she started dating Warren other than her older brother, Alex. As he didn’t have all that many relatives either, he didn’t find it odd that he was never introduced to any parents, grandparents or siblings. It wasn’t that odd in his experience to either not have family around or to be so estranged from them that they didn’t factor into any decisions you made.

His parents hadn’t been all that attached to him, but had worked long and hard jobs that kept them from one another as well. They weren’t bad people, but they weren’t very good at interacting with other human beings on anything other than a professional level. There were times when Warren honestly wondered how he’d come to exist.

Petrichor

Mary smiled as she leaned her head up against Warren’s shoulder, allowing him to lead them slowly across the dance floor.

It was a small ceremony followed by an even smaller reception. Neither of them really had family. Well, that wasn’t strictly true.

Alex watched his ‘little’ sister dance her first dance with her new husband. It had probably been the happiest moment in his life to walk her down the aisle and hand her over to Warren to become his wife.

The sound of the rain on the windows just helped add to the mythical feel of the day ending.

Inspired from the FreeWriteFriday prompt from last week: http://kellieelmore.com/2014/06/20/fwf-free-write-friday-word-prompt-4/

It’s a quiet day today, it feels like it should be raining…

The Earth’s Core

There wasn’t much that she could do in the long run after all. She was tired and old and so very, very alone.

“I don’t know why you continue on.” His voice had a hypnotic quality to it, something that he used to great effect. “You’ve been doing this kind of thing for centuries, eons even, and no one ever notices. It’s like you’re nothing more than the core of the Earth itself. No one really knows it’s there for longer than a few hundred years before it becomes boring and mundane and not worth even thinking about. They hypothesize about what it’s made of, but in the end, they don’t really think all that much about it, no matter how important it is to their very existence.”

She closed her eyes and tried to push away his nagging voice.

“You’re not real, you’re not real.” she muttered.

He grinned; he was winning. It wouldn’t be much longer before she started thinking things like this all by herself with nothing being done on his part at all.

Even the core of the Earth will wobble if given a sufficient enough push. And once such a steady structure was even slightly destabilized…

His grin grew into an ugly smirk.

Time and Place

Her eyes blinked open and she took in her surroundings.

She was in some kind of…place.

There was a snort from somewhere beside her and with a slit shake o her head, she realized that it was from her own vocal chords.

Great, just fabulous! I have no idea where I am.

It was snowing, wherever she was, and she was alone.

“Are you all right?”

She looked up, startled, into the eyes of a man. He was pale and his eyes looked concerned. He held out a hand to help her up and without thinking, she took it. He slowly helped her to her feet, keeping her from falling over when she stumbled and holding her up as her legs inevitably gave out as well.

He continued to talk and ask her questions, but she couldn’t understand what he was saying. She just stared up at him as his face continued to blur around the edges until everything whited out.

It was still snowing gently yet thickly.
